Wednesday Playlist – Get Your Creative Groove On Edition

Wednesday Playlist (catchup) – Mix Tape Madness
This one was from January 13th, and I could have sworn I posted it. #goinginsane.
The topic was favorite song from a mix tape an ex had made for you. A few people said that no one had ever made them a mixtape, and that made me sad. They were allowed to submit a song from a mixtape they’d made someone else, IIRC. If they had neither given nor received a mixtape in their lifetime, I guess they didn’t play that week. If that’s the case for you, let me know, and I will make you a damn mixtape. No one should go their entire life without getting a mixtape, for goodness’ sake.
superbadgirl - My submission is the Moody Blues “Story in Your Eyes” #wednesdayplaylist

El_Dickman – @superbadgirl “Diamond Dogs” by David Bowie. #wednesdayplaylist

UnclePilot - @superbadgirl “Naughty Girls (Need Love Too)” by Samantha Fox #wednesdayplaylist
Wednesday Playlist – More Catchup
This one from January 20th was “songs about materialism & consumerism” and it looks as if it was sparsely replied to. Queries for songs about drinking and sex always get more replies than this, I wonder what that’s all about?
(Of course there’s a slight possibility that I either missed replies or got distracted and stopped collecting them in the middle of the day. Feel free to add yours in the comments, if that’s the case.)
superbadgirl - It is Wednesday playlist time! This week’s theme is songs about materialism & consumerism. I submit Gram Rabbit’s “American Hookers” Decadence is killing me. http://blip.fm/~jfgm4

Cleaning off my desktop and finding random lists of things I meant to post and never did. This looks to be the playlist from 02/03/10, and from the look of it it was “A Song, The Title of Which Describes Your Week So Far” If memory serves, anyhow. Six weeks on, I wonder if anyone can remember why they chose the song they did? (Except for all those who chose songs about hating their jobs, I am just going to presume those still apply)

Filed under: playlists | Comment (0)How 2009 sounded in my world
First thing I have to do is fess up that this list is heavily edited. You see, when I went to look at the last 12 months of music, I saw this:
Which, while accurate, is also very boring. This was definitely the year of Florence + The Machine in my world, however it’s skewed my list because I actually didn’t start listening to her until November, and then listened to her so exclusively that she blew everything else off the chart. So that’s not an actual reflection of what I was listening to this year, and as such I have edited all F+TM songs from my list. Suffice it to say that I think that album is made of magic and wonderment, and you should have a copy of it. But I will focus on other things.
So, discounting the Florence, my number one song of the year was a surprise:
1. Tactical Sekt – Bring Me Violence – I do love this song, I was just surprised it came in quite so high. Not a lot to say about this one, other than that this was a year of violent emotions for me, and this song spoke to that. It also helped me turn my brain off, and made me speed frequently. Favorite line: “I saw the rage rising in the morning sky.”
2. The Rosebuds – Life Like – This is such a spooky, hollow-sounding song. I got this album free from Paste, and I didn’t really respond to all of it. But I do love this song. It’s about taxidermy. Favorite line: “Consider my life, I’m wild but I’m not free.”
3. The Ting Tings – That’s Not My Name - The Ting Tings are another band to whose music I don’t respond evenly. I like some of their stuff, some I am “meh” about, and some – like this song – I adore. This was an awesome driving song this year. Favorite line “They call me quiet, But I’m a riot”
4. Maria Taylor – One for the Shareholder – Maria Taylor is one of those sneaky artists, whose music you listen to sort of in the background, and then you suddenly realize it’s crept into your subconscious and you passionately love quite a bit of it. Not a first-listen artist, but something that grows on you until you can’t do without it. This song is about emotionally vacuous fuckwits. Favorite lines:
“There’s no burden that will agonize you
No worry that will weigh you down.
Not the memories that hypnotize you.
You won’t turn around.
You can’t love me ”
5. The Stills – Still in Love Song - I dunno, I think this is just another song about being involved with people when you know you shouldn’t. I sense a theme.
“We were lovers
we were kissers
we were holders of hands
we were make believers”
6. Damien Rice – Woman Like a Man – Jessica gave me this song on a mix CD, and I immediately fell in love with it. I like some other Damien Rice too, but this song I love. It’s so angry and desperate and hostile. It’s about wanting, and how wanting sucks. Favorite line, very sneakily wrapped into the chorus “I’ll get a cheaper ticket next time – ’cause it really wasn’t worth the ride.”
7. Ladytron – Ghosts – I feel like I spent a lot of this year trying to make myself understood by people who are very different from me. And while that’s a good exercise to undertake, and helps me grow in some way (right?) it’s also frustrating. Sometimes you really just want to be around people who get it, and don’t need so much hand-holding. Careening around unintentionally offending people, or feeling as if you are, is exhausting. This one actually turned out to be rather prophetic.
“Now I see you
from the corner
clock strikes
and I know you will be drinking aloneThere’s a ghost in me
who wants to say “I’m sorry”
Doesn’t mean I’m sorry.“
8. Anya Marina – Move You – this is another one from a Paste CD. I do like several songs of hers but this one has this wonderful “Where do you where do you where do you where do you where do you get off?” line in it, and that’s basically the subtitling in my brain when I am talking to a lot of people. I love it so.
9. The Shins – Black Wave - You know those hollow, lonely songs that are bigger on the inside than they are on the outside? This is my favorite of those. (Well, except for My Morning Jacket’s Wordless Chorus.) Seriously – they had me at “black breeze.”
In the meadow where the black breeze blows,
Where underneath the waves, you were most alone,
Can you hear a subtle, aching tone?
Through the water, through the Earth, chill the bones.
10. Lucky Soul – Lips Are Unhappy – Shake, shake shimmy, this is just pure perky fluffy love song.
Pretending that everything’s cool,
When I’m twenty seven shades of blue,
And my lips are unhappy without you.
So those were the top 10 songs in my world last year. In some ways they don’t seem to reflect what I was really listening to, because there was a lot of angry industrial stompy music going on most of the time. However, I obviously didn’t listen to any of those songs often enough to get them in the top 10 list – the above are the songs I kept coming back to. I included my top 35 songs in the list below, so if you want some stompy angry industrial, it will be there.
It’s always strange to look back at these lists and think about listening to these songs at different times of the year. What I was doing, how I was feeling, how these songs reflected or enhanced that. It’s been a hell of a year. I really hope that less stuff happens this year. I need a break from emotional overload. Guess we will find out next year at this time how that turned out, huh?

Filed under: playlists | Comment (0)Wednesday Playlist – Songs to Stay Home To
The truly heinous weather of the last few days has got me in serious nesting mode. I know I can’t stay home all winter, but this week has not seen me inspired to leave the house at all. It just seems very cosy to stay here at home with chihuahuas and blankets and bad TV and books and peanut butter sandwiches. But if you’re going to stay home, you have to set the mood – thus we have a need for a Songs to Stay Home To* playlist. I know I say this almost every time, but I think this one might be my favorite so far.
I’ve added the songs that I had in my library – some of the others aren’t things I own, so sorry about that if yours didn’t make the list. As always, I’ve banned all Yacht Rock.
Thanks for playing along, hope you enjoy!
kopper – @superbadgirl The Spaceshits “Winter Dance Party” LP

So tonight is the last show ever for our friends’ band, Stella Mora. All good things come to an end—usually too soon—and we’re very sorry to see them go. But this sad state of affairs led to this listing of other bands we’d love to see once more in concert, if only they were still touring.
I would absolutely love to see Oingo Boingo one more time, that was one of the most energetic shows I’ve ever been to in my life. October Project I would love to see again, just so that I could properly appreciate what I was experiencing, they’re one of those bands I got much more into once I had seen them live, then never had the chance again. Anyway, here are the rest of the results from this week’s Friday Five, thanks for playing along! (see what I did there?):

Wednesday Playlist – Later than Late “Animal Songs” Edition
Really, better late than never? The Wednesday Playlist from a few weeks ago. This one was animal songs – songs about people acting or feeling like animals. Inspired somewhat by my watching the movie “Where the Wild Things Are” and a lot by the Florence + The Machine song “Howl”
If you could only see the beast you’ve made of me
I held it in but now it seems you’ve set it running free
Screaming in the dark, I howl when we’re apart
Drag my teeth across your chest to taste your beating heart
Also put one of my favorite songs of all time, Poe’s “Wild” on there, and it’s interesting to me how similar the lyrics are to Howl’s.
You wrote the rules to try and contain me
You broke ‘em
Now you have untamed me
and I’m wild
I go wild
Still very caught up in the idea that sometimes we interact with each other in ways that make us feel insane and illogical, and more like we’re reacting on animal instinct than human reason. Sometimes it’s easier to attribute the way you’re feeling to hormones or instinct or some other force outside your control – because honestly your brain can’t be that addled all on its own, can it? No, no, no, of course not. It’s nature. Or something.
Sorry if there’s anyone I left off here. I can’t search for #wednesdayplaylist this far out, so unless it was an @reply to me I can’t find it. I may try to do better and be more timely next week. Then again I may not. I am an enigma, after all.
- avandonsel - Ooh, the new Flaming Lips “I Can Be a Frog.” http://bit.ly/9Kses
- jeniburns - I suppose “Hungry Like The Wolf” is already taken. Does “Godzilla” (Blue Oyster Cult) count as an animal song?
- butterflyfish_ I added Oingo Boingo, No Spill Blood :-)
- hipntrendy - from my boss ‘bat out of hell’ by meatloaf
- hipntrendy - ’In the still of the night’ by white snake
- evad23 - ”She’s A Frog” by The Flaming Lips #wednesdayplaylist
- laurabean - carry me home by the murmurs
- hipntrendy - my friend EWWT submits ‘Bad Touch’ by The Bloodhound Gang
- _bunny_ - Scorpions – Rock You Like a Hurricane. The lyrics are especially funny when spoken out loud in your best German accent.
- gatewaygroupie - Duran Duran, Hungry Like The Wolf. The Cure, Lovecats. #wednesdayplaylist
- Lorizs_tweets - Animal Instinct ~ The Cranberries or Public Animal #9 ~Alice Cooper #wednesdayplaylist
- cbellers - ”Cat Fight”, Dance Hall Crashers
- El_Dickman - 1/3 of all songs made by the Japanese. Or maybe “I want to F**k you like an animal” or whatever it’s called by NIN.
- sub_english - The Cure’s “Lullaby.” Also? “Catepillar Girl.” #wednesdayplaylist
Experimenting with Lala.com
Playing around with Lala.com, and it feels a bit weird. I feel like lala is peeking through my underwear drawer when it scans/uploads all my music library and playlists. But the idea of having access to most of my music, independent of device, no matter where I am is kind of seductive too. (plus it’s now scrobbling to my last.fm account, which always makes me so giddy!)
So let’s see how playlist embedding goes. This iTunes Genius-generated playlist is one of my favorite of the year.
Let me know how it plays for you. I am not sure how this works if you’re not a member of Lala and you don’t have these songs in your library.
