America’s Most Murderous Cities – Forbes.com

…a comparison of the 72 American cities with a population over 250,000, using data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program, reveals that some places are definitely more murderous than others.

Something that they don’t highlight here but I will, check out the forcible rape stats compared to other high-murder-rate cities. Hopefully I have done the math correctly here to figure out rapes per 1,000 people. (Ex: divided Detroit pop by 884.462 to get 1,000 people, then divided their total rapes by 884.462 as well.)

Please correct me if I am wrong. Not to parrot Barbie, but for me “Math is hard!”

Detroit
Pop: 884,462
Forcible Rapes: 593

Forcible Rape per 1,000: .67

Baltimore
Pop: 637,556
Rape:138

Forcible Rape per 1,000: .22

New Orleans
Pop: 431,153
Forcible Rapes: 87

Forcible Rape per 1,000: .20

Newark, NJ
Pop: 280,877
Forcible Rapes: 87

Forcible Rape per 1,000: .31

St. Louis
Pop: 346,879
Forcible Rapes: 337

Forcible Rape per 1,000: .97

Basically, though we’re 5th in murder, we’re WAY higher than the other high-crime cities in rates of “forcible” rapes per capita. Actually there was a scandal here a few years ago where the police had not been reporting actual rape stats to the FBI, they hadn’t been actually taking reports of some rapes, judging for themselves, apparently, that some cases weren’t rape. Check out the article.

you know, I feel as if I may be seeing some micalclark-style causality here. Get raped–>find out that fucking fuckwad also gave you an STD–> shoot his ass dead—> his brother shoots you dead for revenge–> your sister gets drunk after the funeral and leaves the party/wake after getting raped by a guy–> finds out the fucking fuckwad also gave her an STD, etc etc.

    That explains a lot, actually.

What other kinds of rape are there…? I mean you can’t have consensual rape.

Man, Susie. You should move to the Bronx. I’m going to check out how much of list they’ve got in those little picture thingies. In case I ever move, I want to know where not to go. Like, I might have gone to Oakland, but it’s #6. Pass on the Oaklandness.

Dang. It only goes to 10. Well, no danger of me going to any of the others. Most of them are cold. I’m already cold here. Might as well stay at that point.

Last week I was out in ‘burbia visiting the parental units, and I went to the craft store. And I was coming out and walking to my car and some guy says something to me. Like, ‘Nice day, huh?’. And I look at the guy and my mind is moving a million miles a minute as I simultaneously:

    • clutch my purse
    • mentally judge the distance to my car from where I am standing and my chance of outrunning the guy
    • mentally judge my chances of taking this guy (he was shortish) in hand-to-hand
    • regrip my keys so as to stab him in the eyes with more force and accuracy
    • answer, ‘Yes, it’s a nice day.’
    • smile and try to look friendly/normal and not like a psycho

And then I got to my car and thought – heck, it’s complicated being a girl. :|

    You’re not kidding.

I was just over on the BBC news site reading the articles about those two murdered girls they dug up in a backyard. That freaked me right the hell out. Particularly since they’ve only gone through the yard and ground floor so far. :-(

[...] surprising to me that people don’t read more about how to use condoms, and how it’s not nice to shoot people.    Filed under crime, st. louis [...]
