Welcome to the war zone

August 27th, 2007

Oh what a night.

ST. LOUIS — An off-duty, rookie St. Louis police officer shot and killed a 16-year-old boy who had pulled a gun on her in a robbery attempt outside her home late Saturday, authorities said. It was one of at least 10 shootings on a bloody night in the city.

The thing is, you know this is happening becuase it was the second decent night of weather in the last month. The first night everyone went out and pissed everyone else off. The second night they went to do something about it.

The article outlines the other 9 shootings as follows. (the last one fucks me up the most for some reason)

— A woman, 22, was grazed on the upper left arm in a drive-by shooting about 10:30 p.m. as she was walking in the 5800 block of Lotus Avenue.

— A 17-year-old boy was wounded in the abdomen about 11:15 p.m. when an unwanted group showed up at a backyard party in the 4700 block of Cupples Place.

— Three 17-year-old boys were wounded by an unknown shooter who fired into a crowd about 11:30 p.m. in front of Club Amp, in the 1600 block of Delmar Boulevard. A few minutes later, a 16-year-old girl was shot in the leg on the rear parking lot of the club.

— In two drive-by shootings that might be linked, a man, 26, was critically wounded shortly after midnight while on a vacant lot in the 2800 block of Gamble Avenue, and, about 35 minutes later, a 64-year-old man was shot in the left arm while sitting on his front porch in the 2600 block of Hebert Street. In both cases, shots were fired from an older model, dark green Cadillac.

— A man, 41, was shot in the leg by an unknown person about 1 a.m. Sunday as he was walking on Greer Avenue, near Newstead Avenue.

— A 17-year-old youth reported that he was shot in the leg about 2:15 a.m. while walking near Madison and 11th streets, but police said he may have been wounded in an incident at a nearby fast-food restaurant.

— A man, 22, was shot in the abdomen about 2:30 a.m. as he was sitting on a bus stop bench in the 1300 block of Goodfellow Boulevard, at Page Avenue. The shot was fired from a passing minivan.

Gads, that’s all awful. And your assessment is probably spot-on as to why it happened. This is the kind of thing I used to live with daily back when we were in Los Angeles, only I never thought much of it because I’d lived there my whole life. Now when I start to get all misty thinking of friends, museums, clubs, and competent specialist doctors that we don’t have inour new tiny town, I try and console myself with the fact that at least the news almost never leads with a shooting — whereas in LA, that was the first half hour.

 Ok, I’m never going to live in a big city. Not ever. Although I don’t think Boston has that many shootings…

No shootings, but some guy fried himself on the third rail at a T station. Still not living there. It’s all full of people. You couldn’t get me in a club if they were giving out free money.

Those shootings weren’t near your neighborhood, were they, Susiepants? *worry*

Some of them were probably near me, I didn’t read all the details, honestly. I figure I stay off the front porch and I am already halfway safe. I can’t be bothered to care at this point. If someone’s going to shoot my ass, let them.
