The difference in neighborhoods
I work in a neighborhood that many consider “bad” or just plain scary. It’s actually not as bad as it is abandoned, destitute and empty. Case in point, this house that I pass every day. A few months ago it caught on fire overnight, and the man living there was killed. He was by all accounts an alcoholic who was smoking in bed when he fell asleep.
The house stood scorched and empty for a few months, a total hazard to any curious kids walking by. A few weeks ago, we had a massive storm that knocked down lots of trees and branches all over the city. In my neighborhood those branches were cleared by the end of the next day. A huge tree fell into the street in front of this house, lay there for a day or two, then was pushed back up into the yard, presumably to rot. Street crew is obviously not too concerned about clearing that one.
Then last week the house started collapsing. As I drove by?I noticed this line of neat little white coats, all lined up in a row on a rack. Something about that neatness, someone preparing for their life, their job, whatever. Ironing those jackets, hanging them neatly. What happened to that person? Neat and tidy in the middle of chaos and ruin. Anyway, I needed to take a picture. Here it is. Click for larger size.
PS: Some of you may remember the vine house in this neighborhood, from last year. Here it is again for your viewing pleasure.
