Dogs eat the darndest things

June 19th, 2007

OK, I know he’s a puppy, but Jakester is perhaps part goat. His latest is getting big (like 4″ long and 2″ in diameter) pieces of wood from the yard and bringing them inside to chew on. But that was easily topped tonight when he ran inside with a full-on corncob. Whole thing, just hanging out of his mouth, goofy expression on his face like “W00t! Look at this shizz!” (because Jake uses out of date ghetto vernacular combines with l33t speak) Anyway, he’s pretty good about dropping things when I tell him to, IF he doesn’t think he can get away from me.

Crap weather today, so no working in the garden. But I did lay more brick this weekend, and I have the middle bed almost completely outlined. I got a new rosebush (I know, I know) which is gorgeous, and the smell is out of this world. It’s an Abraham Darby Rose, and this is a picture (not of mine but from the web) of what it looks like:

It was consolation for not being able to buy the Magnolia tree I was wanting because it was $219.

My Rose Mallow Hibiscus is covered in huge buds, and I am hoping that it will bloom those big, gorgeous blooms like I saw at the nursery.

The herbs are going nuts, so they seem to be in the right place, and I haven’t killed my hydrangea yet, so all is good! Anyway, I hope I can do some more work in the garden tomorrow. I am going to plant a row of privet hedges to keep the Mexicans from being able to look into my yard from their stoop. Hopefully they grow up quickly.

One day, I was walking Kita along the sidewalk when suddenly she lowered her head midstride, scooped up something flat and long and grey, and continued walking along non-chalantly hoping I wouldn’t notice (I guess). It turned out to be a long-dead, dried out, road-flattened squirrel. It stuck out on either side of her husky-head about a foot as she trotted happily along. It was hilarious, yet gross.

She was most indignant when I made her put it down.

That was her special prize! Her major award! Her coolest thing ever that she found! Moms just don’t understand anything.

Today I’m glad I have indoor cats.

I hope your roses do well! I can’t grow anything that isn’t a weed, so they tend to die here at my house.
