It’s more garden, so there

June 13th, 2007

It’s amazing to me how NOT far six bags of mulch will go! Esp. considering what it takes to get them home. But yesterday I used the bricks that my neighbor Mark purloined for me to edge the right-most flower bed, and today I hauled in all kinds of mulch and got that laid down. Now I’ve got me a pretty dang professional looking type flower bed up in here. Now I just need… 675 thousand more mulch bags to finish! I thought I snapped a picture with my security cam, but apparently not, or my computer munched on it. Tomorrow.

I also picked up a sprinkler at Home Despot, they had some on clearance for $2.50 because the boxes had gotten all effed up. So I got one and hooked it up, and watched the dogs try to figure out what new torture device I had installed. The concept of them standing still and the water moving (and sometimes hitting them) wasn’t really going down so well. So once I was done mulching, and all sweaty and dirty and gross and covered in bug spray, I sat in my overstuffed folding chair and watched the sprinkler in the sunset. For some reason, there are things that I own that make me feel like I have a home, and this sprinkler became one of them tonight. A $2.50 sprinkler, it’s such a grown-up, parental thing to have. And it was pretty to watch it in the sunlight, even if the dogs hated it.

I got my seeds from tinyseeds.com today and I was unearthly excited about it. I bought seed for more balloon flowers, white coneflowers, Amish broom corn, super-cool autumn sunflowers and bunch of other stuff. I know it’s late to be messing with seeds, but they’re mostly perennials, so they can just get established this year and bloom for the first time next year.

Also the army is dumping toxic waste into the ocean, and Baptists still like King George. But what the hell can you do about that? My neighbor got me even more bricks for my beds, and that’s all I am going to care about for now.

On a large Over the Rhine kick, they’re a good lazy, hot-weather band. These are the lyrics to “Cruel and Pretty” from their album “Ohio”, which I highly recommend.

He woke
He knew that he was dying
He spoke
And found that he was flying
Upstairs
High above the city
Through the ceiling of the stars
So cruel and pretty

Arms spread across the dark river
The night air causing him to shiver
Like the fluorescent lights in the Seven Eleven
Meet me in the backstreets of heaven

I don’t wanna kiss you goodbye
I don’t wanna kiss you goodbye
Hello, hello, hello, how the time flies
I don’t wanna kiss you goodbye

He woke
He knew that he was dying
He spoke
And found that he was flying
Upstairs
High above the city
Through the ceiling of the stars
So cruel and pretty

Electric lines and wispy jet contrails
Ships at sea and B&O train rails
A tunnel of light like the Seven Eleven
Meet me in the backstreets of heaven
