(Is that a real word?) So we don't just have a disaster where 1000 people are killed, we have a "horrific" disaster, or we have a "brutal" murder. Journaliswts never use one word when 3 or 4 will do to describe the same thing. Actually, now I'm on this subject politicians in particular really piss me off when they say, "This will be a quantum leap forward..." I always want the interviewer to ask, "So you mean it will be something very small and hardly noticable?"
