Why the Internet Sucks (Hint: Because People Suck)

May 8th, 2009

So I did a simple Google search, trying to find out where Firefox stores internet history. Just for my own information, I have mine cleared out automatically each time I close the browser here at work, but I didn’t know where those files were stored until they were deleted, and I wanted to know. I found the following post on techspot.com, with someone posing the same question:

“Can anyone tell where I would find the Firefox versions of Temporary internet files, cookies and history folders please.”

There are two pages of replies to that simple question, but pretty much none of them are helpful.

  • People told the poster where to go within the browser to delete the files – not what the poster had asked.
  • People berated the poster for wanting the information they’d asked for, rather than some other information the respondent felt would be more useful.
  • People recommended other programs than the one the poster was using. Totally off topic.
  • Someone else came and recommended still another program in contradiction to the first program to replace the original program
  • Note the no one has yet answered the damn question.
  • Someone recommends still another program.
  • Someone questions why the original poster wants the info
  • Someone brings up the FBI and the hypocrisy of the poster.
  • Someone calls the original poster the Thought Police.
  • Someone brings up kiddie porn.
  • Someone schools someone else on their grammar.
  • Someone “didn’t realize this was English class.”
  • Someone states that they’re a Christian and the bible says porn is bad.
  • Homosexuality is also evil, apparently. Lustful thoughts = more bad badness.
  • Organized religion is maligned.
  • Someone else pleads for the actual answer to the question.
  • Someone explains the origins of organized religion.
  • Someone starts quoting Exodus.
  • Someone starts discussing the origins of written language.
  • Someone maligns the bible.
  • Someone comes out in favor of porn.
  • Someone says they should all use Opera anyway.

I gave up at this point, so I don’t know if the question is ever answered, nor do I care anymore. Mostly I want to go live in a box under a bridge down by the river.

I can answer the reason for this in one simple statement:

“The world is full of fuckwits”

To elaborate, technology has now become so commonplace and easy to use that anyone can use it – so they do. Add to that the fact that the Internet has now given every fuckwit in the developed world a voice and they are determined to use it.

You see, in the real world although these people would sit next to you on a bus or train (I seem to attract them) and try to strike up a conversation with you on something boring, they would be quickly told where to go.

On the Internet though they are free to express their ill-informed and uneducated opinions on everything. Oh, and because there is no real chance of anyone popping over to punch them on the nose they are also free to act the way they’ve always secretly wanted to in real life: Like complete arseholes. No more having sand kicked in their face by the big kids, now they can get their own back on the world that created their own inadequacies (sp?)

I completely agree with you though. The Daz forums used to be the most laid-back place I knew. If I see an interesting post with a question then I’ll take a look. If I can solve the problem, or if it’s interesting to me then I’ll take some time. If it seems tedious or too long to deal with then I don’t bother posting. But there are an increasing number of people who feel a need to post things like “Why not use the Search function you noob?” and other helpful comments. The irony is that they could have posted a link to the right information with hardly any more effort.

By which arguement I now return to sum up all of the above:

“The world is full of fuckwits”

This is the kind of bullshit I spend my days trying to prevent. Doesn’t always work. Most days, I want to be the one screaming “ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? YOU’RE THIS STUPID, _AND_ SOMEHOW STILL SURVIVING? DARWIN WAS WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY WRONG!” Usually, it’s just “ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?”

    Oh, the helpfulness of people.

Incidentally, I suspect this is my Firefox cache:

    C:\Documents and Settings\tungmobi\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\zuxe1c6k.default\Cache

    That sounds likely.

I don’t have a “cache” folder in the equivalent place in Vista (C:\Users\Heidi\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\zm51bqu9.default) so it may or may not be the same if you’re running Vista. There are some files in there about bookmarks and backups and stuff.
