Wednesday Playlist – Group Therapy Edition
Honestly, it’s not like these things are hard to put together, just time consuming. I’ve actually been doing something called “work ” while I am at work, and that cuts into my available time for blogging. So I am two weeks behind on playlist posting. Not that that’s particularly important to anyone but me, but anyway.
OK! So the playlist for two weeks ago was unintentionally traumatic and disturbing for some people. Choosing the topic “Worst Songs Played at Your High School Dances” apparently had some people spiraling down a negative memory vortex of shame and ostracization. I had submitted The Time’s song “Jungle Love” because the song was annoying, and watching all these dipshits in their Gunne Sax dresses and U-Men sweaters do that stupid line dance really fucking irritated me. So, that’s normal right? Everyone’s got something like that, right? Apparently not.
The first response to my original tweet came from Evad23 with:
I never went to a high school dance. Thanks for bringing that all back. Thanks.
Jesus. What a dork.I don’t care how cool his hair is now.*
OK, better hope for our next respondent. What have we got? OK it’s gatewaygroupie with: They didn’t play music in the bathroom where I was always w/ my wailing bff after her crush dissed her in front of his posse.
Holy shit.
Wait, doesn’t that sound familiar? Ah yes, she clarifies No wait, that was Grease.
Ah, here’s someone who actually attended a high school dance: Guaca_molly I was going with Wannabe, Spice Girls… then I remembered the Macarena…..that shit sucked. . . bad. I agree, Molly. That shit did suck bad.
OK, gatewaygroupie comes back with an actual submission, with I’m going to go with Madonna’s Vogue. explaining: There is not much more tragic than a gymnasium full of farm kids trying to act cosmopolitan. Agreed, that’s pretty tragic.
More traumatic memories, this time from lah_rah who submits: “Love Bites” by Def Leopard. I was so NOT slow danced with in high school, and that song always reminds me of it. Aww, well here’s hoping that Roland slow dances with you all the time now. If not I am sure I know a few guys who’d volunteer to serve all your “getting slow-danced with” needs.
libster77 submits: “I’ll make love to you” by Boyz II Men (i think). So awful at a teen dance! Agreed, I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.
cbellers Keeps it simple and non-traumatic with his submission, Electric Slide.
trmink thinks this topic is A little too restricting this week. I didn’t go to high school dances because they didn’t serve alcohol.
_bunny_ has some negative memories of Billy Idol’s cover of “Mony Mony,” with obligatory “naughty” audience participation. . . ugh.
narcise joins team cbellers: um, Electric Slide. hands. down.
laurabean says i’ve blocked out the majority of my high school years. i remember something about “the way you look tonight”…eric clapton?
UnclePilot gets all religulous on us, with: We didn’t have dances at my high school because it is sinful to rub one’s body against another. We had BANQUETS. Glad to know he’s gotten over that whole sin thing, now that he’s married.
Now, I think at this point I had so many negative comments about “WAAH! I didn’t go to HS dances and now I am going to kill myself!” That I swapped over to “Worst song you remember from your HS years.”
_bunny_“Rock and Roll” and Dr. Who theme.
avandonsel gets confused for a moment, submitting: All the music was good at HS danc… oh. Wait. That was the music playing in my car as I was driving away the other direction.
_bunny_ then shares some other biographical information, with I managed to miss all HS dances (before I dropped out) as well. I was too busy driving to spooky trailer parks to buy weed.
laurabean clarifies what the problem is with this particular topic: i suspect the majority of us were the freaks & nerds in high school, thus not “stereotypical” hs experiences.
SgtHotpants Chimes in with That stupid Chingy song, with the shimmy shimmy cocoa puff bullshit. She then continues with a whole list of hip-hop anti-favorites: Also, Nelly’s “EI” and “Hot in Herre.” Eminem “Forgot About Dre” and “The Way I Am.”
Once we’d broadened out the topic, trmink submits “Dust in The Wind” – Kansas. If anyone like this song, let me know, so I can unfollow you.
DaveWWT refuses to play this week, replying Like I haven’t erased all those memories from that long ago with drugs and alcohol by now.
Of course I don’t play that game, so I start threatening, Alright well if you won’t tell me a song I am going to tweet that you never went to a HS dance b/c you were playing D&D with your grandma all those nights. And also crying.
Leading him to break down and say I would have to say anything by Styx is equally annoying.
At this point the conversation devolves into a debate on which bands of that era sucked the worst. After chastising me for blaspheming Journey, UnclePilot says I’ll see his Styx and raise him Extreme and Nelson.
avandonsel finally fesses up with Ok, fine. I did go to a couple hs dances. I vaguely remember both I & the poor boy feeling obligated to dance to…Boyz II Men “The End of the Road” at the end of the night. “I’ll make looooove to you, like you want me to… Awkward? Mostly, I remember finding it weird that a bunch of dressed up kids were standing around a cafeteria listening to Nirvana.
k_del went to a “open” HS, no dances or sports…just pocket protectors and D&D. Though she claims she Did go to a dance in college…
Schweinhundt reveals no long-held angst, keeping it short and sweet with his submission: Def Leppard “Pour Some Sugar on Me”
Likewise The_Cyr with his submission Pop that Coochie or Rumpshaker.
and cvbarnhart with Kylie Minogue – The Loco-Motion
Perhaps we’ve had an end to traumatic HS dance memories?
No, of course not.
stevodarkly I never attended a HS dance, but surely “Switching to Glide” by The Kings is the most adenoidally agonnoying song EVAR. and admits that I found the popular “My Sharona” by The Knack to be highly annoying also.
jenxdigital songs played at dances? “electric slide”, “boot-scootin’ boogie”, Macarena, Who let the dogs out, I’ll think of more, LOL
butterflyfish_ confesses: I like Journey. LOL. I’m-a have to go w/ True by Spandau Ballet. Unless Steve Buscemi is singing it. Then it’s good. Also, we always laughed at the Duranies, and the girls w/ the Choose Life (Wham!) shirts. Actually the shirts are still funny.
todderickv is one of our last entrants, with “All out of Love” Air Supply, don’t think that was at my hs dance, but REO, Chicago, Journey, Styx et all seem to be covered
And the final entry of two Wednesdays ago is from the inimitable hipntrendy whos says: ugh, where to begin? um, Too Shy by Kajagoogoo
And that’s it! I promise to be more circumspect in my choice of potentially harmful playlist topics in the future. Group therapy session meets at Mangia, pretty much any time, any day of the week.
*obviously this is a wee joke. Both evad23 and his hair are super-cool.

*Waves at Heidi* – was beginning to think you were still offline from your computer woes. Good to see you’re still able to get online!
Lizzie was horrified that all these people don’t like Styx, btw. Her comment was along the lines of “what the hell do they listen to, emo?” :-P
*waves back* I did a second revert-to-factory-state, and I’m stable so far. *knock on wood* I’m avoiding using my C drive for pretty much anything, though. Accessing the C drive much = frozen PC. :-/
