Thanks Dim! I am hesitant to write a big screed about my quote-unquote process, because I don't want to seem like a self-important ass. But I did learn some things, and I hope they're helpful to other people.

I have also become the person who carried a small notebook everywhere I go, because random sentences pop in my head unexpectedly. Luckily I can conceal that in my bag, I don't know what you would do. Write on your arm maybe?

Wow! Thanks for posting all of that - I'm seeing some useful info there. The story I'm writing starts in Manchester, England - a place I have been to, but know little about, along with a couple of short scenes in New York. Luckily I'm in a position now to choose where to set the rest, so from what you've said maybe I'll bring it a little closer to home and at least use the local places, even if I give the towns different names.

What bugs me personally is what you say about this time being able to start with little idea of the story and then discover it as you go along - that's because I used to be able to do that when I was about 14/16 and writing stories in English classes at school. something that I seem to have lost. Hopefully it'll all come back to me eventually.
